The playful cut-out in S/S 2022 fashion week is what makes it special. It evokes glamour and sexuality through dresses, bottom-tights and body-con tops.
We found that more than 10% of catwalk looks featured cut-outs placed at different parts of dresses, tops, and joggers in our analysis of over 400 designers and 10,000 items. This is a sign that cut-outs will be a major commercial trend in the next two to three seasons.

The cut-out is here for the love of everything that is holey. Although we have seen it on runways for six seasons now, the Spring-summer 2022 catwalk fashion trends saw more than 8% increase compared to the S/S 2020-21 season.
Cut-outs aren’t a passing fashion, as shown on the runways of Paris, Milan and London in Spring 2022. However, they will be around for a very long while.
Cut-out dresses were a major fashion trend in 1965. They went underground, much like the crochet dress which dominated the era. Vintage styles returned and the progressive vision of the 60s began to look kitschy.
In the late 2010s cut-outs returned with a vengeance. While they have seen some fluctuation between designer pieces and mainstream saturation, they are back at the top for Spring 2022 with more than 10% increase compared to previous five catwalk seasons.
Designers are finding many ways to poke, cut and slash their clothes to show the skin beneath, perhaps to play into the possibility of letting in spring warmth and the gazes of others. It is true that a little bit goes a long ways, and that even though a cut-out might be revealing, it’s what it doesn’t reveal.
