Fall is as an exciting season for beauty. As we were ready to reenter society, we thought about our office and backward-to-school beauty looks. A survey found that 47% would wear makeup more often once social restrictions are lifted and everyday life returns to “normal”. However, this is not yet happening. We’re not going back to pre-pandemic life, despite the mask mandates being back in force and variants swirling about.
This begs the question: Where will beauty go this fall? Experts say the answer is two-fold. Kenneth Cho, an editorial makeup artist, says that there will always be two camps. “Some people will want to be creative and expressive and apply all the products. But I believe there will be a greater emphasis on a more refined regimen.”
This season’s trends range from subtle to outrageous. The beauty trends for fall include bright red lips, color-blocked nails, and vibrant red hair. There’s plenty to inspire your look in the next months, it’s obvious. Scroll down to see makeup, hair and nail trends that we are excited about for fall.
Makeup
- Chocolate Brown lips
Chocolate brown lipstick was a big hit in the 1990s. It was worn by everyone from Naomi Campbell to Jennifer Lopez. This warm-toned shade continues to make waves this season. We’ve seen it on celebrities and influencers over the past few months. According to AJ Crimson, a celebrity makeup artist, a lipstick and liner in chocolate can make a powerful statement on any skin tone, from fair to deep.
For a matte finish, stick to AJ Crimson’s S+M Sultry or Matte Liquid lipstick in Boy Bye ($22). The Lip Bar’s Lip Gloss, Heartbreaker ($8) is for those who want a glossier finish.
- Sheer Stain Lips
This season, we’ll be playing with different lip colors and finishes. Kenneth Soh, an editorial makeup artist and member of the beauty review board, believes that sheer stains will be more popular than tints. He says that the new lip tints will not only be more dewy, but will also be more underlying, leaving you with a beautiful colored stain even after the glossiness has worn off.
We recommend Clinique’s Almost Lipstick ($20), or Uoma By Sharon C’s It’s Complicated Lip Tint ($7) to your makeup collection.
- Eye-Catching Eyeliner
There will be an emphasis on eye makeup for the next few months, as masks will continue to be popular. We expect a rise of intense and unexpected eyeliner looks. Soh said, “I look forward to seeing liners available in a variety of colors such as deep berry reds and violets, rich vine leaves to go with traditional black liners.”
For the Dior Haute Couture Autumn Winter 2021-2022 show, models wore deep blue eyeliners. Peter Phillips, Dior Makeup’s creative director and image director, focused the product at the lower lashline to create a beautiful reverse cat-eye. The look can be replicated easily with a creamy, pigmented liner.
We recommend Dior’s Diorshow 24-H Stylo ($33), or Kulfi Beauty’s Kajal Eyeliner ($20)
- Experimental Eyeshadow
The fall eyeshadow trends prove that there are no rules in makeup. All the looks we have seen recently on runways and on social media exude joy and playfulness, which is what we want for fall. Models were dressed in pastel-colored color-blocked shadows for Georgio Armani Prive’s presentation. On the outer and inner corners of the eyes, Off-White showed eyeshadows in bright blue and yellow. Crimson expects that deeper shades (such as khaki, smokey green, burnt-rusty orange and cranberry) will have their moment in the spotlight this season. He says, “I believe there is a lot to play here.” The greens can be bright or deep. These shades will work well with fall color palettes. “As an alternative to dark shades, I’ve been using khaki eyeshadows on clients. It adds depth and texture for my neutral-colored clients.”
Hair
- All About Bangs
Bangs were a huge success. It’s no surprise that the phrase “How to Style Curtain Bangs”, was one of Google’s most searched terms in 2020. One year later, we don’t see any signs of our shared love for bangs diminishing anytime soon. “Bangs will be a popular haircut this fall,” says Lulu Pierre, hairstylist and founder at Boho Locs Lulu Pierre. Bangs are one of the most easy ways to update and refresh your haircut. This year curtain bangs have been huge and I don’t see them slowing down. Blunt bangs are also a trend that is gaining momentum this fall.
- Red color
Celebrities like Arlo and Ciara have proven that copper has been the hot hair color this summer. The color will be around for a while longer and fall will see more red hair. Sky Kim says that there are many variations of reds. People are now more comfortable with warmer tones than ashy tones, rather than bright, vivid reds.
- Braids
Protective styles such as beautiful braids are always a good choice, regardless of the season. Pierre predicts that braids of all sizes and styles will be in high demand this fall. They were a staple in the hair styles for Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, where they were worn by Pyer Moss and Off-White as well as Christian Dior. Pierre says that braids are timeless and versatile, as well as fun. “My top tip for achieving a braided look is to spray your hair with light hairspray before styling it. This will prevent any hairs from slipping out or causing frizz.”
- Color-Treated Haircuts for Men
Kim can see men experimenting with different styles. He suggests that they go short all over, or have a slight fade on the sides and a little hair on top. The fall is a time for color experimentation, and many men will try bold colors or bleach their hair.
Nails
- Metallic
Smith &. Celebrity manicurist Jessica Tong says maximalist nails have been popular throughout the pandemic. “People want to use bright colors, patterns and textures. This is exciting for me. The vibe is definitely more.”
Metallic nail polishes are one of our favorite fall trends. This shine creates a stunning manicure moment.
These are our metallic nail polish suggestions Smith &. Cult’s Nail Lacquer In Unscene ($18) and Pear Nova’s Classic Nail Lacquer In Night Fades, Morning Haze (14).
- Bold Color Blocking
Color blocking isn’t only cool for clothing. This makes it easy to create Instagram-worthy nail art. Kim states, “I think we’ll be moving away from wavy psychedelic abstract nails for more graphic color blocks in bold colors or metallics.” Chaun Legend, a celebrity manicurist, recently created a multi-colored nail set in vibrant colors for H.E.R. Models at the Jacquemus Fall 2021 Ready to Wear show also had color block nails.
- Almond-Shaped Nails
Nail styles are up to you. Almond has been the dominant nail shape for a while now. Rachel James, founder of Pearnova, says that almond will continue to be the most loved nail shape for the fall season. Kim agrees with this sentiment. Kim says she has used it for over 20 years. She thinks that people will continue to wear their nails longer in the future, “nails are definitely growing.”
