We are celebrating 20 years of Bend It Like Beckham, and we have a throwback to the best Y2K fashions as seen in the movie.
The Beckhams currently dominate my Instagram feed. The wedding of Brooklyn Beckham, the son of David and Victoria Beckham, with Transformer’s star, Nicola Peltz is on one end. The other is a collection of odes in memory Gurinder Chadha, filmmaker extraordinaire for ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ which has completed 20 years.
This film was a coming-of age movie that introduced a cultural reset to the stage. It’s still relevant twenty years later. GenZ readers may not have realized that the comedy is based upon the British-Indian diaspora and features themes of cultural clash, generation gap and female empowerment. It was likely simplified to teenage rebellion and romance 20 years ago. Jesminder Bhamra, or Jess as she is known, dreams of playing professional soccer like David Beckham. Her Punjabi Sikh parents plan to marry her.
Keira Knightley, a young actress, stars in the film. It features a mix of sportswear, Indian clothes, and unique trends that were popular with the Y2K generation. Here are some of the fashion trends that “Bend It Like Beckham” set in motion.
Bend it like Becham – 20 years, Y2K Style
Means Girls Southall
The image of the Indian trio with their highlighted hair, acrylic nails and lined lips perfectly represented Y2K trends. Their mini LV bags and the abundance of pink sunglasses with rimless lenses will be a striking image in 2022.
Making athleisure cool
The acceptance of Adidas in the athleisure market was triggered by the shorts, socks, and jerseys worn by the majority of football players in the movie. It made dry-fit football uniforms acceptable for day wear in the 2000s. Add Jules (Knightley’s) signature look of a sports bra and oversized pants and sportswear is big.
The legendary silver halter
The night out at ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ involves putting aside the football clothes in favor of clubbing. (Yes, it was the era when you could groove in enclosed spaces and sweaty places) requires dressing up. Jules is seen wearing a silver sequin halter top with red leopard stripes. It was quite the scene stealer. This risque look was paired with low-waist jeans and was the ultimate clubbing look in the 2000s.
Bent on the bandana
Hair and sweat are an awful combination. It is important to secure your hair with the right accessories. The two pieces that kept our hair together, Jules’ paisley bandana or Jess’ scrunchies, were essentially Jules’ and Jess’s.
Whether it was the punchlines or the underrated Y2K fashion, Bend It Like Beckham has hooked you. The throwback also serves as a reminder that you need to have a couple if you want to get married.
