9 Best Places to Buy a Plus-Size Wedding Guest Dress

group of person standing outdoors

While the majority of American women are 16-inchers, there is a shortage of plus-size clothing brands for special occasions like your cousin’s wedding. It can be frustrating when friends suggest fun brands only to discover they are only a size 18 or larger. These nine retailers offer gorgeous plus-size wedding guest gowns that aren’t just oversize LBDs and shapeless caftans.

1. ASOS

This U.K.-based retailer has become one of our favorite places to buy so many things. It offers trendy shoes and bags as well as swimwear for people with large busts or long torsos. They also have fun maternity wear. Even better? ASOS offers a majority of its products below $150. ASOS has a variety of cute and simple chiffon bridesmaid dresses, as well as brightly patterned minis and sequined wraps.

2. ANTHROPOLOGIE

Although Anthropologie started offering extended sizes (through 26W), it was so popular that they have continued to expand their collection every season. This means that there are a variety of beautiful dresses, all with a boho, eclectic vibe. The majority of the brightly colored styles can be worn for cocktail parties or semi-formal events, although there are also options for black tie or white tie events. The majority of frocks are under $300, but there are tons of adorable options between $100-150.

3. ELOQUII

Eloquii is a great place to find casual items, but the plus-only label makes exceptional occasion-wear. Are you ready for the good news? All items are under $160, and come in sizes 14 to 28. There are many brightly-patterned midi dresses, satin, and sequin jumpsuits. Each season’s new collections include a few classic black formal options that you can wear for any occasion. Nordstrom also stocks some of the best pieces from the brand.

4. 11 HONORE

We recommend 11 Honore to shoppers who want to spend a lot on designer clothes that will impress. Only plus-sizes 10 to 26 are available at the luxe website. This includes high-end brands such as Reem Acra and Diane Von Furstenberg, Brandon Maxwell, and Carolina Herrera. The price is more expensive than other stores, with dresses starting at $150 for casual styles and going up to $4,000 for formal gowns. However, we don’t know of any other website that offers such a wide selection of designer plus-size pieces.

5. ADRIANNA PAPELL

Although you may not be familiar with the brand, you’ve probably seen Adrianna Papell’s formal sheaths or sequined gowns as you browse Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Anthropologie. It was founded in 1980 to create beautiful occasion wear for all women. Although the designs are more formal, they feature lots of sequins and embroidery. However, there are some casual options that can be worn for beach or cocktail weddings, such as the floral floaty number above. The prices start at $150. However, you will often find dresses for sale if your budget is tight. Prices cap at under $400. Everything is available in sizes 14 to 26, although you can also shop smaller sizes on-site.

6. SHOW ME YOUR MUMU

Show Me Your Mumu, despite its unusual name, is an amazing place to find party frocks or bridal party dresses. The sizes range from XXS to 3X and most items are under $200. You will pay a bit more for dresses with sequins or lace overlay, but this is a good place to start if you are looking for a solid-hued, or floral, dress that you can wear to multiple events. There are many colors available, including classic shades such as blush pink and black, as well as trendier hues like deep plum, burnt orange, and sage green.

7. NORDSTROM

We love Nordstrom. Nordstrom has a growing collection of plus-size styles. They offer sizes 14/XXL to 28W/4X. This includes activewear, workwear, and wedding-ready gowns. While there are some party-ready options (see the Lavish Alice miniature above), the majority of Nordstrom’s wedding guest options have an elegant, more classic feel. You will find more Kate Middleton-inspired lace sleeves and longer, more classic hemlines at Nordstrom. Nordstrom stocks a variety of brands so prices can range from less than $100 to $1,000 for designer duds.

8. MODCLOTH

ModCloth is known for its retro-chic vibe. Even if Zooey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon are not your style icons, there are tons of classic, non-quirky designs on this site. Nearly all pieces are under $200, and most frocks can be found in the full range of sizes (00/XXS through 28/4X). ModCloth’s collection is more casual, and can be worn for semi-formal events or formal occasions than for black tie events. However, there are some fancier options available if you love the brand.

9. RENT THE RUNWAY

Rent the Runway pieces can’t be purchased unless they are having a sample sale, but rentals might be worth looking into if you don’t want to buy yet another wedding guest dress that you won’t wear more than once. Eloquii and Anthropologie also offer rental subscription boxes. But Rent the Runway offers two big advantages that the others don’t: One off rentals and a wide selection of formal wear. You can get stunning designer pieces by brands such as Badgley Mischka and Marchesa Notte for a fraction the retail price. If you are unsure how an item will fit, you can always add another size free of cost.
