“Maximalism reigned supreme in many fashion trends this season, and I’m happy to report that autumn/winter footwear is no exception. The new season runways were spectacular with high-heeled boots and chunky platforms. There was also a lot of texture with fluff, feathers and lace. There was also a lot of sparkle and shine with jewel embellishments and metallic fabrics.” Emily Stott is Stylist Ambassador at Stitch Fix UK.
Thigh-high boots were paired alongside mini skirts. Mary Janes complemented the most stylish winter coats. Trainers gave a sporty twist to floaty frocks. These standout fall winter shoe trends are the perfect finishing touch for any look.
The beauty in this maximalist trend’s simplicity is that it allows people to experiment with texture and color, in whatever way they feel comfortable. Although it is unlikely that everyone will suddenly be wearing fluffy shoes, the option is available if they so desire.
These are the eight trends in shoes we believe you should know come fall 2022.
1. GROWN-UP MARIA JANES
For fall 2022, the classic school shoe is being redesigned with an adult twist. Mary Janes graced the runways at Versace, Giambattista Valli, and GCDS. They were equipped with statement buckles and high-heeled platforms in metallic colors, which is a stark departure from the traditional, prim and proper style we are used to.
These shoes, which look like a doll’s shoe with a round toe and a buckle fastening, are still elegant and comfortable thanks to their block heel and platform sole.
“We saw many platform heels on runways this season, but don’t be intimidated by their height. The chunky sole makes them easier to walk in than regular stilettos.” Paula Moore, woman&home fashion director, says that you can team this look with modern tailoring such as a skirt or trouser suit to create a stylish weekday look that will take you from the boardroom into the bar.
2. HIGH SHINE
Winter is party season, so it’s not surprising that there were many sparkles and sequins on the runways. This gives us an extra boost of endorphins. Shoes are shining brightly as we move into 2022, whether it’s a minimalist silver mule or a striking thigh-high boot.
For a casual look that is still stylish and professional, pair a slip-on shine mule with jeans and the best shirt for a day-to-day look.
“Finding shoes to wear to Christmas parties is going be fun this year. The new runways have a lot of metallics and embellishments – but sparkles don’t just belong for Christmas.” Emily suggests pairing a classic look of jeans and a t-shirt with metallic trainers for lunch with your friends or adding shine to workwear with metallic pumps.
3. THIGH’S THE LIMIT
A winter staple, the over-the-knee boots are now a must-have. You can reach thigh-high heights. You have a variety of options when it comes to styling knee-high boots (and thigh high), such as slinky sock-style designs or classic leather stilettos. Although this might seem daunting, it is actually quite easy to style. The statement boot does all of the work, so make sure you keep the rest simple. A longer length will give you more coverage than a shorter dress or skirt, so you can ditch the tights.
Emily explains that thigh-high boots will also be big for AW22. Although they might seem intimidating at first, you can style them with every day items in your closet.
Layer a pair of black or brown thigh highs over fitted jeans, leggings, or a shirt in oversized white. You can be bold and wear brightly colored thigh-highs under a longline jacket or skirt with an asymmetrical hem if you want to show off the boots more.
4. FLUFFY STUFF
You’re in luck if you hate taking off your slippers to go out the door. Fashion runways are taking notice and giving our feet the fluffy slipper look but in shoes that can be worn outside. This trend isn’t the most practical, but it’s the most comfortable. For a touch of fall fashion, you can make it more wearable by adding furry Birkenstock sliders to your look and fluffy embellishments to your sandal straps.
5. SPORTY SPICE
Comfort is the top priority in fall winter shoe trends 2022, and stylish sneakers will not be going away. Gucci was the first to collaborate with Adidas, but trainers were also seen at Loewe and Coperni. You can make it versatile by choosing styles that go with everything, such as monochrome skater sneakers and best-selling white trainers. For the perfect high-low look, I pair mine with my favorite blazer and wide-leg pants. Paula suggests sleek, black or white leather tennis-style trainers to keep the look professional.
6. FASHION WELLIES
Never have wellies looked so stylish! Designers decided to embrace the outdoors, instead of keeping wellies for rainy days or when trying to figure out what to wear at festivals. The look may evoke Kate Moss’ Glastonbury look, but you can also wear weather-proof wellies to complete your look in the rainy fall months.
Chanel’s rubber boots featured the double C logo embossed on them. This gives skirts and dresses an extra luxurious touch. Wear them with knitted socks in cool khaki or polished black, and pair them with some knitted socks.
Wellies are no longer reserved for the countryside. Paula says a black pair of wellies is very sleek. You can style them with jeans, skirts and your winter coat just like you would regular knee-high boots.
7. BUCKLE UP
Designers went all out when it came to fall winter shoe trends 2022. They used buckles to their extreme. Emporio Armani used buckle straps that extended the legs of its boots, while Miu Miu boots had more attitude thanks to a variety of chunky buckle fastenings. This timeless trend will not be out of fashion in the next few years. The best winter boots are a must-have for any winter collection. This versatile style is great for adding some interest to your black boots. You can also team it with feminine touches like a floral skirt or trapeze dress.
8. PRACTICAL FLATS
Although platforms are common, there was still plenty of room for fancy flats. We love the comfort and style of flats, from simple ballet pumps to more masculine loafers. Pair your ballet flats and socks with Miu Miu to create a stylish look that will keep your legs warm.
“Although the ballet pump was first introduced in the early 2000s, it has not really disappeared from our radar. However, we are seeing more of them as people ditch uncomfortable clothes and abandon their ballet pumps post-pandemic. They can be worn with everything, from the most elegant dresses to your favorite jeans.” Paula suggests that you update them by wearing loose-fit mom jeans instead of skinnies.
