Life is becoming more unpredictable every day. One thing that has helped us all this year is the joy and comfort of nostalgia. This can be found in old TV shows, vintage fashion or past makeup trends.
It was so amazing to be able to see the Dior Spring 2022 Show during Paris Fashion Week, even though it was only on a screen. The runway was populated by models who walked down it, showcasing the latest designs of the French fashion house by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Each piece told the story about our new normal through comfort.
Peter Philips, Dior Makeup’s creative director and image director, styled the makeup. It brought us back to the early 2000s. We were all optimistic and hopeful about the new millennium and the eye was always the main focus of any makeup look.
The models’ bold black liner was stark contrast to Dior Cruise Show in July, which used a more natural and simple approach. Philips vision was not influenced by the early aughts but the setting which was in Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
He says, “When you look at it, it’s an ugly black box with beautiful stained glass — like in a Gothic church, cathedral.” “The stained glass was created by a collage artist. The eye makeup is one part of a stained-glass collage. The eye is taken and framed like leadwork.”
Philips used Dior’s 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette for the nostalgic look. It provides subtle coverage and gives the lids a natural, vintage-inspired appearance.
For a bold and succinct look, he applied the Diorshow 24H Style 091 in Matte black to his entire eye. For extra impact, the makeup artist applied a few coats Diorshow Iconic Mascara.
He shared, “It’s an eyeliner that frames the eyes almost like art.” “Same thickness eyeliner around the eyes.”
Complexions were kept natural-looking by the models using Dior skincare products and Face & Forever Skin Correct Concealer and Body Foundation. Philips’ bold eye choice was not only a brilliant move, but also very relatable, with masks becoming an ever-present staple in our wardrobes.
We expect to see more eyeliner inspired by the 2000s in 2022.
