Flared jeans may be the hottest trend in denim for 2022, but we all know exactly when the original popularity of flared pants began – in the 70’s. It’s been 50 years since then (is it really that long? They’re back and hot, and they’re being seen on runways and celebrities everywhere. Flared jeans are more roomy than skinnies, and more feminine than boyfriend cut jeans. They offer the ultimate in comfort and style.
Fashion stylist Katie Eastwood agrees. Flared jeans have a retro vibe due to their popularity in the 70’s. She tells us that no matter the occasion, everyone wore flares. “Following a period in retro revival with shows like The Serpent, and trend setting fashion choices by celebrities such as Harry Styles it’s no surprise that 70’s favorite styles are back on the scene again in 2022.” Be careful about how often you wash your jeans once you have settled on your style. To avoid shrinking your jeans and maximize their longevity in your wardrobe.

What top is appropriate for flared jeans and why?
Flared jeans can be paired with a variety of tops including oversized shirts, t-shirts, blouses and roll necks. There aren’t many styles you should avoid.
Experts like Katie say the trend is very flattering and easy to wear. However, after so many years of wearing skinnies, it can take some getting used to. Katie says that adding volume to your arms or shoulders can help balance out your figure in flares. It creates an hourglass figure, by drawing your eyes upwards to your shoulders/arms and down to your waist. Then draw your eyes back to the ankle.
Tops look best when tucked in. You can add a belt to give more definition to your waist. But if you layer like Kate Moss, you can leave your base layer untucked. Katie suggests that you can wear blazers and tops with shoulder pads if you want to be bold.
Take inspiration from Victoria Beckham when it comes to colour. You can either go bold with a block shade or stick to a more neutral palette like Amanda Holden or Kate, using head-to-toe cool colors.
How can you fix a too-long flared jean?
Your flares should not drag on the ground. Gen Z may disagree. You have several options to make them shorter. You can either hire a tailoring company to finish your flares professionally or you can do it yourself.
Firstly, tailoring. You could spend between $10-25 depending on your location and how much you need altered. It’s worth it to invest in a statement pair that you will wear for many years.
Another option is to try your hand at hemming the jeans yourself. You can find many step-by-step Youtube videos. These videos will help you to make a pair of wide-legged thrifted jeans.
Let’s add one more thing about the use. You should take care when cleaning your jeans. Jeans can shrink in the dryer. To ensure that your favorite pair of jeans lasts a lifetime.
