The topic of coconut oil for hair is hotly debated in the beauty industry. Coconut oil is a controversial topic in the beauty world in total. Some people believe it’s a miracle product that can heal any condition, while others think it’s a heavy and oily mess that will make your hair greasy in no time. What is the truth?
Coconut oil is so versatile that it seems like there isn’t much you can do with it. Coconut oil is great for baking and cooking, but it can also be used on the skin to enhance any skincare routine. Coconut oil can be used to remove makeup, especially when it is used in the first step of double cleansing. It can also be used as a cuticle oil or hand cream.
Coconut oil has been used for centuries as a do-it-all cosmetic product. There is some confusion about coconut oil and hair. We reached out to experts to determine if coconut oil should be used for hair or not. We spoke with Laura Tudor, Centred founder, as well as Nikita Mehta, Fable & Mane, to find their take.
COCONUT OIL HAIR – A GOOD IDEAS, OR A VERY DRASTIC ONE!
Coconut oil can be used for hair, but it will work or not depending on what your hair needs are. Coconut oil is unique in that it hydrates hair. Tudor explains that coconut oil is mainly composed of a fatty acid called Lauric Acid. “Lauric acid is easy to absorb into the hair shaft and aids in maintaining keratin.” Coconut oil is a great ingredient because of its chemical structure and ease of absorption.
Coconut oil absorbs into the hair and moisturizes it from the inside. While other oils can be placed on top of your hair and coat it, it doesn’t feel as if it is actually there. Coconut oil is not recommended for sensitive hair.
Ross Charles, a hairdresser, explains that oil and water do not mix. Oil repels water. It either pushes it away from the hair or prevents it from entering the hair. He says, “If your hair is damaged by over-processing or is weak and fragile, you should get amino acids into your hair shaft to strengthen it.”
You might decide to stop using your weekly hair oil treatment, and instead use the best hair masks for your hair issues.
COCONUT OIL IS GOOD FOR HAIR
Coconut oil will not cause hair damage in any way. Other things can cause hair loss, including bleaching and heat damage from straighteners.
Remember that hair is not a solus. Because the follicle (aka the life source of hair) is located on the scalp, it is vital that the scalp is healthy and in good condition. The best scalp treatments for hair loss are becoming more popular.
Mehta says that coconut oil is rich in vitamins and essential oils. These not only nourish the skin of the scalp but also remove excess sebum from the hair follicles. Your hair will function better if your follicles don’t have too much sebum.
COCONUT OIL HELPS HAIR GROWTH
We just found out. The easier your hair grows, the healthier and clearer your hair follicles will be. Coconut oil for hair is a good option to aid in growth.
Massage is another important component that works well with coconut oil. Coconut oil or any oil to massage your hair and scalp is an ancient ritual. The scene where Kate Sharma oil her sister’s hair in Bridgerton is probably familiar to you. This Indian tradition is performed once per week in families.
Scalp massage is not new. To grow hair and relax the mind, most Indian families have an oil head massage performed by a family member. Mehta says that this is done before bed, so there are plenty of stories and fables to share. “Hair oiling, or “slugging”, is becoming a trend in the West, but it’s a tradition that dates back to the East for over 5000 years!”
There’s a reason oil is massaged into hair and scalp. The head controls all our sense organs as well as the central nervous system. It helps to calm down the body and stimulate hair follicles. This encourages hair growth and density. Coconut oil is great for your hair, but it’s the act of massaging that can maximize results.
Coconut oil is good for hair because it doesn’t alter the chemical structure of hair or cause any damage.
Coconut oil can be absorbed into hair, but it does not prevent other elements from being absorbed, as Charles mentioned earlier. You may want to stick with a traditional oil for hair if your hair is extremely dry or has been damaged by bleach or dye.
HOW DO COCONUT OILS WORK IN HAIR?
Coconut oil should be applied to dry hair at least 10 minutes before you plan to wash it or the night before. This will allow it to absorb well. It is important to wash your hair, even if you sleep with it. Your hair will feel oily and look greasy. You will get the best results if you wash it with the best shampoo and conditioner.
Mehta suggests this method to combine Ayurvedic-inspired hair massage with oil application:
- Heat the oil. Warm the oil by heating it in your hands. You can do this by simply rubbing together your hands for a few seconds to create heat. The oil should not be too hot.
- Find your center. To distribute oil evenly through your hair, part your hair into a central section.
Top down. Place your hand on the crown chakra. It is located at the top of your head. Stress and tension can be relieved by the crown chakra.
- Moment of mindfulness. Use circular motions to massage the scalp. Then, use the remaining oil to finger brush the ends.
- Wash your hair and go to bed. You can tie your hair in a braid or a bun and let it sit overnight.
Coconut oil is super hydrating and you should only use it once or twice per week. Nikita suggests using less than more. It’s easy to clean out if you use a silicone-free oil. You only need to use a small amount, so a little goes a long way. You may only need one drop if your scalp is oily.
Pure coconut oil can be used. It is usually available in jars or containers and is easily found in supermarkets. This coconut oil is in solid form, so it would be necessary to heat it slightly before you apply it to your hair. Mehta suggests either using it in your hands, or heating a bowl with hot water to melt it. Once it has heated, apply it to your scalp and hair.
