It’s not a last-ditch effort to dry your hair on time. You can avoid heat styling by drying your hair naturally. This will help you to maintain your hair’s health and minimize damage from hot tools.
Amy Abramite is Creative Director and Stylist at Maxine Salon Chicago. “The result is shiny hair that feels silky to touch in its best condition,” she says.
Despite this, the main concern about air drying your hair is frizz. You can give your hair some guidance with the right drying technique, and a few products. If you like, you can let it do its thing with a smoother look.
Here are top stylists sharing their tips and tricks for drying your hair.
Shampoo and condition your hair
Frizzy hair is caused by dryness. Proper hydration begins in the shower. Your hair type will determine the type of conditioner and shampoo you use.
Abramite suggests a volumizing shampoo or conditioner for straight hair. This will ensure that your hair does not dry flat and limp. The stylist states that straight hair may lack volume. A volumizing shampoo and conditioner can give hair more body and texture.

Lightweight moisturizing shampoos and conditioners are great for hair with curly ends. They will increase their smoothness, shine and strength.
- R+Co Atlantis Moisturizing B5 Shampoo + Conditioner Set
For curls, use a mild, deeply hydrating shampoo or conditioner. Abramite says that curly hair is fragile and can be very dry so it needs gentle cleansing to balance the moisture. A conditioning shampoo and conditioner will give curls bounce, definition, and soften them without stripping their natural oils. It will also keep frizz at bay.

To towel-dry your hair, you should squeeze and not rub. Angel Cardona, Sebastian Professional Top artist says that it is better to squeeze water out of your hair than to rub the towel back and forth. This will prevent hair tangling and breakage. It also makes it easier to maintain your hair’s condition.
A microfiber towel is recommended by the stylist, but a T-shirt can be used if you don’t have one.
- Aquis Rapid Dry Lise Hair Wrap
Styling prep products can help improve your natural texture and increase moisture to prevent frizz.
Abramite suggests a leave in conditioner for straight hair. It will increase shine and reduce tangles. The stylist suggests spraying a leave-in conditioner or cream on damp hair, starting at the ends and moving up to the roots. To avoid weighing hair down, do not apply product directly to the scalp. A brush that is designed for wet hair, such as the Trademark Beauty Tame your Mane Smoothing brush, can be used to brush hair.
- Shaeri haircare spray
Texturizing sprays can be beneficial for adding volume and hold to wavy hair. Abramite recommends that you first detangle your hair from the ends to the roots. Then, use a wide-toothed brush to comb through the hair. Next, spray a texturizing product in sections to completely saturate the hair. To create a wave pattern, rub product into hair with your fingers. To preserve the texture of the hair, let it air dry naturally. To break up the waves, lightly fluff your hair with your fingers after it has dried.
- Ouai Wave Spray
For curly hair, you can use a deep-hydrating oil or cream (or combination thereof) to increase hydration and define curls. After blotting your hair with a microfiber towel and oil, use your fingers to massage the hydrating cream or oil into your hair. Abramite suggests that you detangle your hair using a wide-toothcomb. A wide-tooth comb is made by Pattern for curly and coily hair.
Next, twist your curls with your fingers. Cardona explains that curly hair can be twisted around one-inch sections and dried.

After you have twisted all hair sections, let your curls go. Abramite advises against touching the hair while it’s drying to avoid damaging their texture and causing frizzing. After hair has dried completely, lightly scrunch the curls to loosen and soften product. Once the curls are set, you should not brush or combing them.
